Pind Daan Puja What is
Pind Daan is the most important and sacred vedic ritual performed at Gaya Ji, in which departed ancestors are offered "Pind" — a symbolic ball made of rice, barley flour, black sesame seeds, honey and pure ghee.
This ritual is performed with the recitation of vedic mantras, and its purpose is to satisfy the souls of ancestors and guide them towards moksha. According to scripture, this is regarded as every person's sacred duty towards their ancestors.
Why is Pind Daan Necessary Specifically at Gaya Ji?
Many scriptures, including the Garuda Purana, describe Gaya Ji as the best and only fully fruitful place for Pind Daan. Pind Daan performed here grants freedom from "Pitra Rin" — one of the three principal debts described in scripture (Dev Rin, Rishi Rin and Pitra Rin).
It is believed that Pind Daan performed at Gaya Ji — within the Vishnupad Temple premises, on the banks of the Phalgu River, or beneath the Akshayavat — bears everlasting merit, satisfying ancestors across three generations.
